Muso Shinden Ryu Iaido
夢想神伝流 居合道

It is really difficult to describe the history of Muso Shiden Ryu since there exist several interpretations. One fact, however, remains beyond doubt; the founder of Muso Shiden Ryu is Hojo Jinsuke Shigenobu, or also called Hayashizaki Jinsuke Shigenobu.

He developed his style between 1596 and 1601 in the province of Sagami located in Northern Japan. He started to show his style all over Japan without naming it. Others, however, called his style:

Shigenobu Ryu
Hayashizaki Ryu
ShinMuso Hayashizaki Ryu
Shinmei Muso Style

He was quite old when he suddenly disappeared during his last tour in Japan. Since then he became a mystic figure.

The term Iaido was only introduced in the twentieth century. Previously, it was known under Nukiai, Bakken, Battoustu, Iai Jutsu, Muso Shiden Ryu, style Hayashizaki, style Shinmei Muso, style Shin Muso and style Shigenobu.

The name Muso Shiden Ryu Iaido is still used nowadays. During the past dynasties this martial art has exercised a moral and spiritual influence on its population.

In the Japanese culture of that time, the Katana (Japanese sword) was onsidered being the most sophisticated weapon. That is when the reigning dynasties realized that the Katana (Japanese sword) and the practice of Iaido could help men to develop their spirituality and to find to their true self by exercising regularily.

Iaido became a discipline requiring moral and spiritual strength before starting to perform this martial art. It has been transmitted from individual to individual until today. Iaido is devided in several families or styles.

SHODEN
CHUDEN
OKUDEN SUWARI WAZA
OKUDEN TACHI WAZA

For some individuals, Iaido means ‘standing and facing each other’ while it means for others ‘draw and cut with a sword’.

Omori Ryu also called Shoden is the most important series of Muso Shiden Ryu. Before the 17th generation, this series contained only eleven movements. The movement GYAKUTE INYOSHINTHAI was only added later.
